Our clients want more than just a liveable or practical space. They want an expression of their lifestyle that melds their needs, schedule and budget with their dreams to create a cohesive work of architecture. To achieve this, our timeless designs and modern architectural vision are dedicated to preserving the context of the surroundings while establishing new and engaging spaces with a style unique to our clients.

Our work is framed around these core principles:

About Millan Architects

Matthew Millan started his practice as a sole proprietor while running the design department of a timber frame preservation company specializing in the adaptive reuse and preservation of historic frames and buildings. He gained field experience in documenting historic buildings and working with traditional construction materials and methods.

Matt moved to Vermont to join a design group dedicated to sustainable, site responsive solutions. Matt quickly became the third principal due to his approachable personality, strong communication skills and ability to manage and lead staff as he continued to work with clients in the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

Upon a return to Philadelphia in 2001, Millan Architects was launched with two employees and a healthy list of projects. With an initial focus on higher end, single family residential projects, our breadth of projects quickly grew to include commercial, institutional, historic preservation, land and master planning services. The cross-pollination of project types allows us to bring insights and experience from one type to another to provide fresh perspectives and custom solutions.

Matthew Millan

Founder

I founded Millan Architects in 2001 in order to bring my client responsive, visionary and sustainable architectural services to a wider group of clients. My approach to designing architecture and running a design studio are the culmination of my life experiences including a background in fine art and a keenly developed power of observation, innumerable hours spent exploring (and surviving) in the natural world, field experience in historic preservation and timber framing, and a personal and professional dedication to embracing sustainability as deeply as possible. Architecture satisfies my curiosity and passion for lifelong learning and the ability to combine my left brain based strong analytical skills and methodical approach to problem solving with my right brain creative and artistic vision, imagination and holistic thinking.

I am involved in all phases of a project from conceptual design through construction administration, as well as managing the firm. My open and effective communication skills are the foundation for successful client relationships that clarify the project goals, objectives and limitations and allow the studio to develop creative and constructive design solutions.

I believe in giving back to the community and serve on several boards and committees dedicated to preservation of natural lands and historic preservation including the Chestnut Hill Conservancy, Chestnut Hill Historic Design Advisory Committee, the Mask and Wig Club Board of Governors, and participating in two AIA Regional/Urban Design Team charrettes.

Away from work, I enjoy spending time (preferably outdoors) with my wife and two children, being a good steward for our historic house and barn, gardening, and staying fit while running, playing soccer and skiing.

Ben Loughin

Project Manager

I strive to be thoughtful, dedicated, considerate, and creative in every phase of the design process– from the first client meeting, learning about their goals and priorities to the completion of the final punch list ensuring those goals are met. I value the development of deep relationships with our clients and collaborators in architecture and construction.

From an early age, I have been drawn to architecture, both through the impulse to create and curiosity of the past. As a lifelong student of history, I seek to place the present within the long arc of the human narrative. Architecture and construction leave an enduring message about our lives in the built environment. This core idea drives my passion for design solutions that can stand the test of time and are tailored to the clients and occupants of every project I work on.

I joined Millan Architects in 2016 to pursue an architectural philosophy rooted in sustainability and deep consideration for our impact on the natural environment. I relish the challenges and opportunities presented by the creative problem-solving required to design projects that are both high performing and beautifully composed. Having worked in architecture & construction since 2007, I bring years of experience to every project, from developing highly technical details to onsite project management.

Beyond work, I find great joy in the time I spend with my partner, our families, and friends– enjoying live music, sharing home-cooked meals, and attending art openings when indoors. When outdoors, I enjoy hiking, cycling, kayaking, and cross-country skiing.
