Matthew Millan
Founder
I founded Millan Architects in 2001 in order to bring my client responsive, visionary and sustainable architectural services to a wider group of clients. My approach to designing architecture and running a design studio are the culmination of my life experiences including a background in fine art and a keenly developed power of observation, innumerable hours spent exploring (and surviving) in the natural world, field experience in historic preservation and timber framing, and a personal and professional dedication to embracing sustainability as deeply as possible. Architecture satisfies my curiosity and passion for lifelong learning and the ability to combine my left brain based strong analytical skills and methodical approach to problem solving with my right brain creative and artistic vision, imagination and holistic thinking.
I am involved in all phases of a project from conceptual design through construction administration, as well as managing the firm. My open and effective communication skills are the foundation for successful client relationships that clarify the project goals, objectives and limitations and allow the studio to develop creative and constructive design solutions.
I believe in giving back to the community and serve on several boards and committees dedicated to preservation of natural lands and historic preservation including the Chestnut Hill Conservancy, Chestnut Hill Historic Design Advisory Committee, the Mask and Wig Club Board of Governors, and participating in two AIA Regional/Urban Design Team charrettes.
Away from work, I enjoy spending time (preferably outdoors) with my wife and two children, being a good steward for our historic house and barn, gardening, and staying fit while running, playing soccer and skiing.
