At this Main Line farmhouse dating from the 1830s, our clients have repeatedly engaged our services to confront multiple design challenges. To complement darker, more interior-focused rooms in the thick stone walled house, we designed a light-filled, airy Garden Room with wrap-around windows that overlooks a stream that flows along the southern edge of the property.
The lantern-like room projects out between two mature sycamore trees that frame the exterior of the addition. The focal point inside the room is the timber frame truss ceiling with curved bottom chords and radial patterns. We reimagined a small and inefficient kitchen with poorly designed accessory spaces by removing all the interior partition walls.
To accommodate multiple circulation paths in the centrally located kitchen space, we conceived of a series of distinct work zones that function independently. Furniture-style cabinets from two different companies, various counter top and backsplash materials combine with the wide plank pine floors and exposed wood ceiling joists to create an artfully designed, highly efficient kitchen.
To the east of the Kitchen, we added a Breakfast Room featuring a reclaimed brick floor, tall windows, and a painted board ceiling with exposed collar ties. The Breakfast Room opens to an upper terrace that is anchored by a stone fireplace and a built-in seating area defined by an Alaskan yellow cedar timber trellis. On the west side of the house, we replaced a commercial, curved aluminum sunroom with an elegant English conservatory featuring a reclaimed brick floor in a herringbone pattern.
Through these renovated spaces and additions, we have turned spatial challenges into opportunities and created finely detailed rooms that reveal a rich palette of materials with a delightful range of scale, texture and color. We worked closely with the landscape design team at Gale Nurseries to integrate the indoor and outdoor living spaces.
The transformation of the landscaping includes the addition of a swimming pool, sheltered hot tub, changing rooms, pizza oven, trellis-covered outdoor seating area anchored by a fireplace and award-winning gardens.
